Survey : Conservation bindings on Western medieval manuscripts

Making conservation bindings on medieval text block that require them often represents a deontological / an ethic and technical challenge for book conservators and collection managers.

The conservation teams of the Département des Manuscrits et Livres Anciens at the Bibliothèque Interuniversitaire de la Sorbonne (BIS) and the Service de Coopération Documentaire Interuniversitaire (SCDI) in Montpellier are leading a consideration about this type of intervention.

This survey aims to provide an overview of the pratices of conservation bindings on Western medieval manuscripts (8th to 15th centuries) in several countries, and showcase unpublished binding techniques.

Response time is estimated at less 10 minutes.

The results will be published.
